'All our time is spent
in the living room
JP and the kids will
bundle on the floor
while I'm on the sofa"
Our heating was on full blast throughout the
winter. It had a huge impact on our energy bills
The living room is where we would usually hang
out as a family, but we couldn't relax properly
while we were desperately searching around
the house trying to find the source of the cold
draughts. We had to pay out a big expense to get
the attic properly insulated, so we needed to find
cheaper ways to make the living room feel warm
Cosiness is the feeling of calm and
happiness. Being Scandinavian myself, I'm used
to cosying up indoors with the help of textiles
and lighting (you might be familiar with the term
hygge'!). Instead of turning up the thermostat,
we cosy up in a blanket.
Never underestimate the power of soft
furnishings! Many people think they're just
for decoration but they're not! In the living
room, we added a large rug to warm up the cold
flooring, hung lined curtains at the windows
and front door and we have lots of cushions and
throws. We made draught excluders with the kids
during one of the Live LAGOM workshops, too.
We changed every single lightbulb in the
house to LED. There are six ceiling spotlights
in three of our rooms- we weren't even thinking
about how much energy they were using at once.
So with our Live LAGOM budget, we bought a
batch of LED lightbulbs. They're starting to pay
for themselves. Not only are we saving energy
we're saving money on our bills
It's never too late to change bad habits.
We want to teach our daughters good
philosophies for the future. If we can all just
make small incremental changes, the difference
to our environment will be much greater.
The whole family has been
inspired to get more involved in
planting and growing. Aoife, our
eldest daughter, grew a huge
pumpkin for her school project
that almost took up the entire
garden! Now we've got a tomato
plant and an apple tree growing
outside, and lots of vegetable
cuttings in the kitchen. It's a
lovely family thing to do.
I love having tealights and
candles dotted around. Rather
than buying and rebuying wax
candles, a fake LED candle is
much more cost-effective and
safer when you have kids.
