Christmas 2020 was a wash-out for many people
so it’s no huge surprise that so many Brits are keen
to make this year an even bigger celebration than
normal, assuming restrictions allow.
This is likely to mean that people will be spending more
and planning earlier, with an impressive 3.3million
saying they’ve already made reservations for the
festive period. It may well actually be the season to be
particularly jolly this year.

The research shows
that UK consumers are
currently feeling excited
about this Christmas and
that eating and drinking
out will play as big a part
in their celebrations as it
did pre-Covid.
Obviously, we’ve learned
the hard way that a lot can
change between now and
Christmas but, assuming
the current restrictions
don’t change, it's
looking to be a very
Merry Christmas for
Hospitality this year.

HGV drivers and the gap in food and drink deliveries grows.
Hospitality was forced to endure the impact of Covid throughout the pandemic. It has also had to manage a
reopening process without hundreds of thousands of non UK national workers sent ‘home’ by Brexit, ending of the
free movement of people. Despite warnings from the UK Road Haulage Association that HGV Driver shortages would
severely damage the UK supply chain. Government’s answer was to increase the daily driving hours allowance of
HGV drivers.
The shortage of HGV drivers just like hospitality workers is due to the ending of free movement of people, leading to a
shortfall of circa 100,000 in HGV drivers. Hospitality has a shortfall of circa 180,000 people across a variety of positions,
leading to availability challenges. However, we are doing everything we can to mitigate these challenges and provide a
reliable consistent service.
