MasterChef in 2014?
I got to the semi-finals, but then I
messed up. I was making Jamaica's
national dish, ackee [a Caribbean fruit]
and saltfish, but I'd only ever made it
with prepared cod before. I was given
a piece of fish that needed filleting
and boning, and I didn't have a clue!
Still, I got the MasterChef apron,
which I always wear when I cook.
Perfect dinner party menu?
I'd serve garlicky prawns, followed
by a big roast leg of lamb with all the
trimmings. For dessert, l'd make an
apple tart with ice cream. I met the
chef Jean-Christophe Novelli when
we were filming This Morning in
Bordeaux and he showed me how
What food reminds you the
most of being a child?
My mum came to the UK from Jamaica
when she was eight and was taught
to cook authentic Caribbean food by
her grandmother. Saturday soup' is a
classic dish it's made using a joint of
beef and all sorts of veg, served with
dumplings. I make it every week
So this was your favourite
when you were young?
Funnily enough, when I was growing
up, I didn't want to eat Caribbean
food! I was a typical kid and just
wanted to have pizza and fish
fingers like my friends.
What was the turning point?
mum preparing amazing food and
realised, "Wow, this woman can cook!
I suddenly 'got it' and asked her to
teach me all the dishes we grew up
with, like chicken, rice and peas.
What do you like making most?
I love Moroccan and Italian food
